“Lights Out” Davis faces Estwick in Contender clash
Former finalist Tsetsi “Lights Out” Davis and his Team Caribbean teammate Charwin Estwick will clash for a place in the semi-final round of the Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Contender Boxing Series welterweight title at the Chinese Benevolent Association Auditorium tonight.
The quarter-final stage highlighter over five rounds headlines a three-fight card and is scheduled to begin at approximately 9:30 pm, with the first of two preliminary fights opening the programme at 8:30.
Davis is the most consistent performer in the short history of the Contender Series, having reached the series’ last semi-final and its two previous finals.
“I have reached the semi-final stage of this series on four consecutive occasions and the final twice, and my intention this year is to go one step better and win the title,” said Davis.
Davis, heading for a fifth-consecutive semi-final spot, got past Team USA’s Courtney McCleave with a fourth-round TKO win after his handlers rescued the fighter by throwing in the towel
To get to this stage of the Contender, Estwick surprised Daniel “The Dangerous” Powell, a fighter of 11 wins and no loss, with a unanimous decision, to register his first win from three fights.
Powell possesses an attractive style of boxing, but he failed to counter the brawling approach of Estwick. He admitted afterwards that it was the first time that he was facing such a fighter and did not know how to deal with such an approach.
Davis and Estwick both said they will be better placed for interviews after the fight. They, however, gave indications that their main objective is to win and move on to the semi-final round.
