Munro’s Dunkley
PENNSYLVANIA, United States — Kino Dunkley of Munro College won the high school boys’ discus throw championship at the 122nd Penn Relays Carnival on yesterday’s second full day of competition at Franklin Field, in Philadelphia.
Dunkley’s mark of 57.89 metres made him the fourth Jamaican to win the event in the last seven years, and the first thrower outside of Calabar High to earn the honour.
Calabar’s Warren Barrett was second in the shot put with 20.00 metres as he watched Jordon Geist of Knoch Senior High in Saxon, Pennsylvania, put on a clinic on his way to breaking the meet record with a best throw of 22.27m, bettering the 22.18m set in 2011 by Nicholas Veno of Morristown, New Jersey.
Dunkley, who was third last year, ended his high school career on a high after his fourth-place finish at the ISSA Boys’ Championships last month.
Kevin Nedrick of Petersfield was fourth with 55.35m, while another Munro thrower, Vikarie Elliott was seventh with 51.98m.
Dunkley was over the 57.00m mark on three of his six leg throws and had won the competition before the final three throws, as Sam Wray of Starpoint Central in New York took second with 56.90m and Daniel Gilligan of Toms River, New Jersey, was third with 56.74m.
In the shot put, Barrett, the CARIFTA Games record holder and IAAF World Junior leader with the 6kg ball, was no match for the defending champion, who had just two legal throws, but they were enough to give him back-to-back gold watches.
Geist opened with 21.8m then unleashed a massive 22.27m put before fouling his next four attempts.
Barrett had his best throw in the final throw of the first round, as Jamaica College’s Vashon McCarthy was third with 19.43m, followed by Sanjae Lawrence of Petersfield (19.21m) on his final throw.
Boys’ Champs Class 1 gold medallis,t Kyle Mitchell was seventh with 18.26m.
