Powell ends prelimianry round of Contender Series against Estwick
Undefeated American boxer Daniel ‘The Dangerous’ Powell and Barbadian Charwin Estwick will close off the preliminary rounds in the Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Contender Boxing Series with a five-round clash in the main bout on a three-fight card at the Chinese Benevolent Association Auditorium tonight, starting at approximately 9:30.
At the end of the preliminaries, the boxers will then be paired to move on to the three other stages of quarter-final, semi-final and final to vie for the $3,000,000, with the winner pocketing the major share of $2,000,000.
Powell, 31, of South Carolina, will be representing Team USA and has a ring record of 11-0 from 11 outings, winning his last by knockout.
Estwick, 35, from Bridgetown, Barbados, who fought on the Contender card last year but lost to Richard ‘Frog’ Holmes, has a ring record of no win from two fights. He has, however, returned to the ring to seek redemption while representing Team Caribbean.
While Estwick is yet to open his winning account after two bouts, he is no pushover and is reported to be in much better boxing shape than he was last year, when he was drafted in as a late replacement for first-choice boxer, fellow Bajan Miguel ‘Hands of Stone’ Antoine.
Though limited in official ring experience, Estwick is a good body puncher and if showing that much improvement over last year’s display he looks to bring a decent level of excitement to the clash against Powell, who has won 81 per cent of his fights though the knockout route. In his fights to date, Powell, who has a Jamaican father who resides in Mandeville at present, has won nine by knockout over a 25-round stretch.
