A worthy race
RACE, a movie inspired by Jessie Owens’ heroics at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, premiered Monday at the Carib 5 cinema.
The event was hosted by the American Chamber Of Commerce (AMCHAM) Jamaica. It was also a charity event for Olympic and World Championship sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce’s Pocket Rocket Foundation.
Fraser-Pryce, a two-time Olympic 100 metres gold medallist, attended the premiere which had 300 guests.
“I saw the trailer for Race during a viewing of Creed and thought how much it related to Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce’s impact on Jamaica, the world, and her sport of choice,” Ron McKay, AMCHAM Jamaica president, told theJamaica Observer.
The premiere is the first of several planned by AMCHAM to support the Pocket Rocket Foundation throughout 2016.
Directed by Stephen Hopkins and co-written by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, the film stars Stephan James as Owens, and his brother Shamier Anderson as Eulace Peacock, Owens’ compatriot and arch-rival.
The Scarborough, Canada-based siblings’ parents are from Spanish Town. The cast also includes Jason Sudeikis, Academy Awards winners Jeremy Irons and William Hurt, and Carice van Houten.
In a previous interview with the Jamaica Observer, 24-year-old Anderson spoke about playing Peacock.
“Having the opportunity to spread knowledge on what people of colour had to endure when trying to pursue their passions in that time gave me purpose when playing the part,” he said.
Owens won a record-breaking four gold medals at the 1936 Games, to the disgust of German dictator Adolf Hitler who claimed that blacks were an inferior race.
Unfortunately, Race is not yet available for local viewing.
“It is not available at this time,” said Melonie Graham, marketing manager of Palace Amusement Company Limited — operators of Carib 5, Palace Cineplex in St Andrew, and Palace Multiplex in St James.
