Debutants to highlight tonight’s Contender Series
Camion Goldson and Rashid ‘Boogie Man’ Stevens, two aspiring and experienced amateur welterweight boxers, will make their professional debut in the main bout of the Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Contender Series at the Chinese Benevolent Association Auditorium tonight.
Three fights are carded with Goldson and Stevens, both 28 years old, meeting in the Contender Series main bout over five rounds at approximately 9:30 pm. One of two amateur fights on card will open the show at 8:30 sharp, with the other fight to follow shortly afterwards.
In the three previous rounds Team Caribbean scored considerably easy wins against their Team USA opponents. For this fight though, the opposition is expected to be more competitive at this the penultimate stage, with the Jamaican Goldson representing Team Caribbean, and Stevens, Team USA.
As has become the norm, very little is known beforehand of the Team USA opponent as several calls to his local contact number went unanswered. What is rumoured though, is that he is a former three-time Golden Glove winner. If this is so, then local boy Goldson with a record of 38 fights, 31 of which are wins and a loss, should be in for a busy night.
But the young man from Central Kingston said that he is not fazed by the prospect of getting into the ring with a reputable contender. “I am challenged by such a prospect and have trained to overcome any obstacles before me. I was prepared for combat by Castro Brown. I did my glove work and build up to this debut fight against the skills of Sakima Mullings, Kemahl Russell and Ricardo Planter”, Goldson said.
