Several seeds advance at General Accident Open Tennis Championships
MOST of the seeded players in the men’s open singles at the 2016 General Accident Open Tennis Championships are through to the second round after first-round play at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston yesterday.
However, they mostly received byes and include top seed Damion Johnson, who is scheduled to play his first match against unseeded Nicholas Chung tomorrow. Chung crushed another unseeded player Rupert Pinchas in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
Second-seeded Dwayne Pagon will also play his opening match tomorrow against unseeded Christopher Barrett, who gained a walkover against Mivkel Riley.
Meanwhile, unseeded Jovaughn Mullings defeated unseeded Alrick Sproul 6-2, 6-0 and will face sixth seed David Goldsmith in the second round; Jason Calloo battled through three sets before eliminating Peter Berry 6-2, 4-6 (10-2 supper tie-breaker). Calloo will meet 12th seed Adam Harris in the second round.
Jermaine Case came from a set down to knock out Ashford Knight in three sets 1-6, 6-4 (11-9 super tie-breaker).
In the men’s professional 35-and-over, ninth seed Leighton Burton beat unseeded Nigel Casserly in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, while Gordon Chuck advanced through a walkover against eighth seed Alan McNab; Terrence Forrester also received a walkover from Ashford Knight, likewise Stephen Todd over David Isaacs.
