Nooks riding out the storm
Fifteen years after his remarkable comeback with God Is Standing By, singer George Nooks’ Ride Out your Storm recently topped the influential South Florida Top 25 Reggae Chart.
It is a cover of veteran American gospel singer Betty Jean Robinson’s 2012 song.
“ Ride Out Your Storm is very inspirational and the response is very tremendous. It connects with everybody, for all of us in some way are going through challenges of one kind are another,” said Nooks.
Released in February, Ride Out Your Storm is the first single from his gospel album of the same title, slated to be released next month by Tads Record.
Nooks struck big in 2000 with God Is Standing By, a cover of Al Green’s I’ll Be Standing By. It sparked a comeback for the artiste who made a name in the 1970s with songs like Tribal War and Forty Leg Dread. The latter was done as deejay Prince Mohammed.
While he did an album of Dennis Brown covers in 2006, Nooks said his priority is making inspirational music.
“Right now it’s [singing gospel] is uppermost on my agenda. I’ll continue to sing about love, love of people, love of women. That’s what the fans know me for and I will never leave that out.”
