Heaven open to positive input from Harris
Wilford ‘Billy’ Heaven, who was re-elected to serve as president of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA), said he is not averse to having the losing candidate, Fritz Harris, serving on any committee, providing it is for the betterment of the sport.
Harris, who was honorary secretary during Heaven’s previous two-year reign, lost 47-52 in Wednesday’s JCA presidential election held at the Jamaica Conference Centre.
“I will look at the vacancies that will come up in terms of committees and so on, and if he [Harris] has what we are looking for, certainly he will be engaged. I will never let a challenge on my presidency influence or prevent the growth of cricket,” Heaven told journalists shortly after he was declared the winner.
“Anybody who is about cricket would not really let an election, and the outcome of an election, change that. And I hope the outcome of that election has not changed anything.
“The important thing right now is to build a team. We have to incorporate everybody… who can make a contribution to the development of cricket,” added Heaven, also the chief executive officer of the CHASE Fund.
Harris, a long-time board member of the association who has served during a number of different administrations as secretary, was gracious in defeat.
Asked about the possibility of him taking up an offer to serve on any JCA committee, the Clarendon Cricket Association president said he will take a few weeks’ break before considering any such offer.
“Whilst I’m disappointed, I commend the president for retaining his position and wish him all the very best.
“I have Clarendon, and that’s a pet project of my life. I would think about it [any committee appointment] because my heart is in cricket and it’s difficult for me to say no to cricket.
“[But]…what I would probably want to do, is for the next month or so, to be away from it a little bit and to recharge my batteries. And then we see how it goes after that,” he told members of the media.
