Ricam Academy claim Manchester Major League title
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Maxwell Robinson emerged the hero as Ricam Academy beat Downs FC 3-0 at Brooks Park on Sunday to claim their first hold on the Manchester FA/Magnum/Captain’s Bakery Major League title.
The bustling centre forward scored the first two goals either side of half-time to effectively hand his team the trophy, before Romario Rochester added a third goal in time added.
The victory means Ricam, a club founded in 2014, will end the season with the two major trophies in the parish. They had earlier won the Brumalia House Knockout competition, beating Hillstars FC in the final.
And there could even be a third trophy in the stars for them as they, along with Downs, will now represent Manchester in the JB Rum/South Central Confederation Super League play-offs.
They will compete against teams from St Elizabeth, Clarendon and St Catherine football associations for a place in the National Premier League play-off series.
At the moment, Coach Andrew Smith is not looking beyond their current success.
“We are a young team,” said Smith. “We started out two-and-a-half years ago, and we have a plan to reach the National Premier League within five years.”
He added: “We have two years to accomplish this goal, so being in the play-offs is a bonus for us. We are going to use it to prepare for the Super League that is coming up in October.”
Regarding his side’s performance in the final, Smith said: “This is our third time playing against Downs this season, and we defeated them twice before this so we know we are better and fitter than Downs.”
Despite of few nervous moments, that confidence was evident throughout this contest. They led from the 12th minute when Robinson lashed home a thunderous shot past Downs goalkeeper Ranieke Blake. And he made it 2-0 in the 70th when he finished off a swift counter-attacking play.
Downs came close to an equaliser a few seconds earlier, with their ace striker Gary McDonald crashing a long-ranged effort into the cross bar.
The rebound fell kindly for Ricam, who took no more than three passes doubled their lead.
They added a bonus goal from a similar move three minutes into stoppage time when Rochester scored a fine solo effort.
