Arnett rally to clip MoBay in RSPL top clash
Champions Arnett Gardens signalled a resurgence of interest in finishing atop the 2015/16 Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) standings when they secured a come from behind 2-1 win over former champions Montego Bay United at the Anthony Spaulding Complex yesterday.
Owayne Gordon gave Montego Bay United a 21st-minute lead, but goals from Kenniel Hyde in the 43rd and Leon Strickland in the 45+2 minutes secured all three points for Arnett Gardens.
With the win, the Jerome Waite-coached unit have now slipped into second position on 57 points, three behind leaders Portmore United on 60, while Montego Bay United have been relegated into third on 56 points.
After a tentative start by both teams, Arnett Gardens settled quickly and enjoyed the better of possession with a few enterprising build-ups. The hosts were assisted by a strong wind which consistently swept across the venue and made things difficult for Montego Bay United as they seemed more dangerous with each attack.
However, having failed to capitalise on their possession, Arnett Gardens were made to pay as Montego Bay United grabbed the ascendancy against the run of play. The prolific Gordon netted his 16th goal of the season when he broke away and shook off lone defender Dicoy Williams before driving a left-footed shot past custodian Peter Harrison.
The hosts were left to rethink their approach, coupled with a forced early substitution after Marcelino Blackburn was left ailing from a knock in his lower back. But It may have been a blessing in disguise as his replacement, Neicko Williams, injected some amount of tempo into the attack.
The hosts were back on level terms when Hyde placed a well-executed chip shot over the head of Romaine Bowers in goal for Montego Bay United, and later pushed ahead just before the whistle when Strickland got on the end of a well-weighted corner from Kemal Malcolm to make it 2-1 at the break.
