Three-trophy spread highlights today’s raceday
A three-trophy spread will highlight an 11-race holiday card at Caymanas Park today with the Bonnie Blue Flag penultimate call as the day’s principal showpiece.
The Bonnie Blue Flag Open Allowance call has attracted a field of six going 1,820 metres for a purse of $845,000 with a post time set at approximately 4:45 pm. The first post is at 12:45 pm.
The two other highlighters on the card are the Al Gopie Memorial Cup, a native bred four-year-olds and upward maiden condition race going 1,000 metres straight for a purse of $500,000, and the Jockeys’ Guild Of Jamaica Trophy, a native-bred, four-year-olds and upward Restricted Allowance V (NW2) call going 1,500 metres for a purse of $530,000.
All six runners in the Bonnie Blue Flag highlighter are well suited to the journey and have all been fairly well prepared for a closely contested event. Nonetheless, with the staying American imports
Brawn andLong Running Train among the locals, the Harry Parsard-owned and trainedLong Running Train looks poised to open as the favourite to take the event.
However, based on current form and preparation, the Anthony Nunes-conditioned
Southern Cruise has done enough in his last four races to command serious consideration with the light impost and the lightweight jockey Paul Francis remaining in the irons following their win on last, albeit by the disqualification ofMiracle Star, who dead-heated with Nunes’ charge.Miracle Star is once again in the mix and just as light to be again competitive with the lightweight rider O’Brien White replacing anotherlightweight jockey, Aaron Chatrie.
In for comparable expectation is the Wayne DaCosta-trained and also recent winner
Hover Craft. A six-year-old by gelding byHe’stherealthing out of theRoyal Minister mareRoyal Pizzaz,Hover Craft is a very versatile character who is adept at spring as well as stayingand is better suited to this extended sprint than the rest of the field.
A seasoned campaigner at the Open Allowance level,
Hover Craft is back up in grade for the up and down sprint event, with top weight, but should not be far away at the end with Omar Walker.
The most potent danger to a
Hover Craft victory will be the aspiring four-year-old bay filly,Long Running Train. TheFlower Ally petal out of theDehere mare,Cuz You Don’t Know, has already demonstrated her versatility by winning over both the 1,000 metres straight and the 1,820 metres distances in commanding fashion among her age group. But her early exploits did not stop there as she went on to post a fighting second by two lengths toPerfect Neighbour in the Harry Jackson Grade One event, going 2,400 metres in her final race as a three-year-old.
The far-striding filly then returned 63 days later to make her four-year-old debut in auspicious fashion by winning in Open Allowance company by one length from seasoned campaigners
Campesino andAll Correct going 1,600 metres. As is evident, today’s event is not her most testing at this level, and whoever wins this ahead of this ‘long-running train’ filly will have to dig deep.
