Highway
If you are planning on hitting the highway there are a few important car travel safety tips that may help you get to your destination safe and sound.
Know Your Road. Before you set out check a map or GPS so you are familiar with the rout. Also it is important to maintain a safe speed, do not drive impaired or tired. The highway is a long stretch of road, sometimes seemingly without end, it is easy for drivers to become distracted or complacent along the way.
Stay Alert. Take easy to use items you can use with one hand, such as a snack container with a lid or a water bottle with an easy open spout. The last thing you want to be doing is fumbling around on the highway. Avoid using cellphones, maps and other things that may take your eyes off the road. Make pit stops along the way, especially during long trips stop and stretch your legs or see the sites. Some of the best experiences happen along the way so enjoy the journey.
Travel with a Friend. In more ways than one a travel companion can be the best way to stay alert. An extra set of eyes to help watch the road is always a plus not to mention good conversation and a back up driver, just in case of emergencies. In the event you and your friends are going partying this weekend be sure that everyone drinks responsibly and before hand decide who will be the designated driver.
Expect the Unexpected. You never know when a stray animal may run out onto the road, stay at a comfortable speed and be alert. Look out for road construction and other vehicles as these things can change on the return leg. Clean your headlights and check your windscreen wipers to help increase visibility.
Be Respectful of Other Motorists. If your having car trouble indicate and pull over to the soft shoulder. Turn your headlights on as dusk approaches but avoid over-driving your headlights and do not follow too closely behind another vehicle.
These are just a few things to help motorist while driving. Be sure to check your vehicle and Carry a Disaster Supplies Kit in your trunk. Pack high protein snacks, water, First Aid kit, flash light, small battery-operated radio, an emergency contact card with names and phone numbers, extra prescription medications and important documents or information you may need. Let someone know your destination, your route, and when you expect to arrive. If your car gets stuck along the way, help can be sent along your predetermined route. Most importantly have fun and be safe.
