District Constables to return to communities — Police Commissioner
ST JAMES, Jamaica — Police Commissioner, Dr Carl Williams has announced the planned re-assignment of District Constables (DCs) from police stations back into their communities.
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland, on March 21, Dr Williams explained that the function of these officers is primarily to support the regular Police men and women at the community level.
He pointed out that the DCs were removed from their districts because the Police Force had a manpower shortage at the stations, but that matter is being addressed and the DCs should remain in their areas.
“The District Constables were recruited to be in the districts, to be the liaison between the Police, the community and the station,” the Commissioner explained.
Dr Williams said that Westmoreland will be given priority attention, once the next batch of police officers complete their training, as he is aware that the parish needs more police officers.
He said based on the impact that crime and criminal activities have been having on the parish, he will be assigning a significant number of new officers to the parish to ensure that the human resource shortage in that area is addressed.
