Determined Davis faces McCleave in Contender Series
Tsetsi Davis, the Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Contender Boxing Series most consistent performer down the years, having reached the last semi-final and its two previous finals, makes his entry to the 2016 edition with the intention of going one better than his previous efforts.
Davis, one of five Jamaican boxers, three other Caribbean boxers and eight American boxers taking part in the pool of 16 fighters vying for prize money of just under $3 million, will bow into action against American freshman Courtney McCleave at the Chinese Benevolent Association Auditorium today starting at 9:30 pm.
There will also be two curtain-raiser amateur bouts starting at 8:30 pm.
Davis will enter the ring with a 10-win, three-loss record for the lightweight contest, while the 21-year-old McCleave, coming off a win, will enter the ring with a record of three fights that includes one win and two losses by the knockout route.
McCleave made his debut last year as a light heavyweight and is reported to be a good puncher that earned for him his lone win through the knockout route. He lost his first two bouts against Pablo Valdez and Zed Mitchell but came storming back to win his last against Tybarrius Spears.
Davis told the Jamaica Observer at his training camp yesterday that he did not know who his opponent is, “but I am in this year’s Contenders for the long haul. I have something to prove to myself and my fans. I reached two finals and a semi-final and thought that I was not given a fair deal. This time, I am not leaving anything to chance. I am not at my peak at this time but I will get there when the time comes as my preparation is going on stream,” Davis promised.
McCleave had yet to arrive in the country but was expected to arrive in time for the fight, the third between Team Caribbean and Team USA, and both have scored a win each with Jamaican Richard ‘Frog’ Holmes winning the first bout and Demarcus ‘Chop Chop’ Corley winning the second for Team American by outpointing Trinidad-based Guyanese Iwan ‘Pure Gold’ Azore.
The other Team Caribbean boxers are Jamaicans, Michael Gardener, Ramel ‘Sub Zero’ Lewis and Camion Goldson, Guyanese Barbados-based Revlon Lake, and Bajan Miguel Antoine.
Team USA is completed by William Barber, Kevin Reynolds, Jose Guzman, Anthony Woods, Rashid Stevens and Devontae Seay.
