UWI FC blank champions Arnett Gardens 2-0 in hot-tempered affair
Promoted outfit University of the West Indies (UWI) FC continue to chart the course towards a semi-final spot in the 2015/16 Red Stripe Premier League after blanking champions Arnett Gardens 2-0 in a bruising affair at UWI Mona Bowl yesterday.
Girvon Brown from the spot in the 23rd minute and Anthony Greenland in the 50th minute made the points safe for the UWI team.
With the win they have now slipped into fourth position on 42 points, while Arnett Gardens, who have already secured a semi-final berth, remain in second position on 54 points.
Meanwhile, Humble Lion jumped into fifth spot on 41 points with a 2-0 beating of lowly Waterhouse FC, while Harbour View slipped into sixth after going down 1-2 to seventh-placed Boys’ Town.
In other games, Reno FC came from behind to earn a 3-3 scoreline against Tivoli Gardens, and Cavalier SC handed Rivoli United a 3-1 whipping which may have confirmed their relegation from the nation’s top-flight league.
At the Bowl, it was a mostly one-sided affair in the opening stanza as the hosts had a more purposeful start and easily enjoyed the better of play in the opening exchanges. They threatened on a number of occasions, but Arnett Gardens’ defence held their lines.
The deadlock was inevitably broken after Jamie Robinson was brought down inside the area by Jabeur Johnson and Brown stepped up to calmly slot wide of custodian Peter Harrison from the spot.
The ascendancy remained with UWI FC at the half-hour mark, as the ‘Junglists’, who looked a shadow of their usual competitive demeanour, were marred from having any real shot on target.
The game gradually shifted into a jostling match and was halted for few minutes as tempers flared in the latter stages of the first half, which resulted in referee Kevin Morrison issuing three cautions.
Oniel Thompson and Jason Moore of Arnett Gardens and Akeem Thenstead of UWI FC were the recipients, as UWI FC maintained the lead at the break.
Any hopes of a comeback from Arnett Gardens was quickly erased five minutes into the resumption when Nicholas McMorris orchestrated a counter-attack and picked out Greenland, who expertly drove a right-footed shot past Harrison from the top of the 18-yard box.
