Former World Boxing Organisation Junior Lightweight champion Demarcus ‘Chop Chop’ Corley and Trinidad and Tobago’s Iwan ‘Pure Gold’ Azore will highlight round two of the 2016 Wray & Nephew Contender Series at the Chinese Benevolent Association Auditorium tonight.
Following an opening-night letdown, fans are expected to be royally entertained by this unique fight which pits two journeyman boxers in the ring of fire going five rounds.
Corley, who has fought Floyd Mayweather, has a ring record of 70 fights, including 43 wins with 26 by the knockout route. The 41-year-old boxer has so far fought 480 rounds with a 37 per cent knockout ratio. He was expected to arrive in Jamaica at eight o’clock last night.
Azore, who is already in the country, has a boxing record of 12 fights with nine wins, including two knockouts, two draws and a loss. At 34, he told the Jamaica Observer that he is in very good shape to meet the challenge.
Accompanied by his trainer, former world-ranked Trinidad and Tobago boxer Ulric Johnson, Azore was not due to fight at this time, but according to the Johnson, his boxer is “about 95 per cent ready. We were preparing for the fight diligently and were not expected in Jamaica until the 13th of next month.
“However, due to some glitches with the fighters, the promoters called on us to come at this time and here we are ready to walk away with the title,” Johnson said.
