Chin, Gore, Stephens, Azar win titles at Guardian Life Open Tennis Champs
John Chin and Nicholas Gore captured the boys’ 16 and 18 and under titles, respectively, at the 15th staging of the Guardian Life Open Tennis Championships, which ended at the Liguanea Club, New Kingston last Monday.
The championships were hampered by heavy showers in both the boys’ 16 and under, and 18 and under singles finals that had to be postponed and completed on Monday afternoon.
Seeded at number three in the boys’ 16 and under singles, Chin, who had a 3-2 lead in the first set against top-seeded Damani Cain on Sunday, captured the set 6-4. However, in the second set he made easy work of his opponent and cruised to a comfortable 6-1 win for the match.
In their respective semi-finals, Cain crushed Tariq Simon 6-2, 6-0, while Chin breezed past Karan Chatani 6-2, 6-3.
Meanwhile, third-seeded Gore won the first set 6-4 in the boys’ 18 and under singles finals before the rains caused postponement of the match. When play resumed, he won the second set 6-3.
Gore also produced an upset when he outplayed top seed Daniel Hill 6-2, 6-1 in his semi-final, while Dwyer defeated Gregory Spencer in straight sets 6-0, 6-4 in his semi-final.
The girls’ 16 and under finals was won by Micheala Stephens who defeated Jenna Harrison 6-4, 6-2. In the semi-finals, Stephens beat Moesha Fox 8-2, while Harrison brushed aside Iesha Sterling 8-0.
Daniel Azar captured the boys’ 14 and under singles title in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 over Blake Shoucair, while the girls’ 14 and under singles crown was won by Giselle Sang, who defeated Katherine Dibbs 23-13.
In the boys’ 14 and under round-robin that was played in two groups, Shoucair was the winner of Group One with two wins over Cole McNair and Russell Fairman, while Azar topped Group Two with two wins over Joshua Graveney and David Sevright.
Giselle Sang came first in the girls’ 14 and under round-robin singles with two wins and a defeat. However, Dibbs clinched second place by virtue of defeating Sang 8-7 to reach the final.
The boys’ 12 and under singles title was won by Delano Reeves who beat Alexander Bicknell 8-1, while the girls’ 12 and under singles final saw Abigail Perue defeating Alyssa James 8-3 to win the title.
In the girls’ 12 and under section which had two groups playing in a round-robin format, James topped Group One with two wins, while Perue topped Group Two with two wins to meet in the final.
