10-man UWI hold Tivoli Gardens to 0-0 stalemate
Tivoli Gardens failed to break down 10-man University of the West Indies (UWI) and had to settle for a dour 0-0 draw in their Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) match at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex yesterday.
UWI lost Deno Schaffe to a second yellow card in the 59th minute but were able to hold the home team at bay for a valuable away point.
It wasn’t the most aesthetic of games with chances few and far between on a windy evening.
The result was a minor setback for UWI in their attempt to make the semi-final, although they provisionally climbed into fourth spot on 39 points.
Tivoli Gardens, who failed to provide head coach Glendon ‘Admiral’ Bailey with a birthday victory, inched to 33 points and remained in eighth spot.
They are six points above the relegation zone but that could be reduced if either Rivoli United (27) or Waterhouse (25) picked up maximum points in their late kickoff yesterday.
Andrew Peart, the assistant coach at UWI, said it was a good away point under windy conditions that made football difficult to play.
“We are happy to come away with a point, given that we played the last half an hour with 10 men. The players really stuck in and played like we were playing with 11 players, so we are grateful for the point.
“It didn’t do much for us in terms of movement up the table, but at least we avoided defeat today,” he added.
Damion Gordon, the assistant coach at Tivoli Gardens, said his team lacked that killer instinct to put away teams when they have the advantage.
“It has been plaguing us for majority of the season in terms of finishing the chances that we created. We have to work on that. It looks good on the training pitch, but it’s how they bring it over into the game and that set us apart from getting three points today,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Reno led twice but had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Portmore United and remained in the clutches of the relegation stragglers.
Renario Downswell scored twice for Reno in the 33rd and 84th minutes, while Tremaine Stewart and Ricardo Morris netted for Portmore United in the 70th and 89th minutes, respectively.
Portmore United failed to go top of the league but consolidated second spot on 54 points while Reno stayed in 10th spot on 32 points.
