Being happy
I am thrilled that Jamaica is ranked among the happiest people in the world, according to the latest Happy Planet Index published by Britain’s New Economics Foundations. Indeed, it would seem like Jamaicans take happy pills, because regardless of existing hardship — unemployment, poverty, and low education — they seem to always be happy, embracing life’s challenges.
I am glad that we do not depend on indiscriminate sex, drinking and smoking to keep us happy. The beneficial temperate use of wine and marijuana is abused and, often, sadly replaced by indiscriminate use of rum and cigarettes. Excessive alcohol use destroys the human body, especially the brain, nerves and immune system.
Scientists agree that good health and happiness go hand in hand, and Jamaicans’ good health is a major contributor to their being ranked among the happiest countries in the world.
As one who has suffered two motor vehicle crashes, paralysis, and living with a walking disability, I can attest to the fact that a merry heart is good medicine, as it strengthened my bones. Allow me to share my secret formula for abundant health and extreme happiness — which is more than an inherent mind, body and soul experience.
1. Quietude is the first beatitude. I spend a lot of time being quiet in nature and with nature’s God.
I feast daily at the earth’s rich fountains of healing energy, using only food, water and herbs to strengthen the healing powers within me. I also bathe in freedom’s pool daily and remain free from sin, stress and fear.
2. Music as therapy stimulates and refreshes me. I have trained my senses to appreciate healing sounds and vibrations in thought, speech and song.
3. I laugh a lot.
4. I exercise my power to choose love and not hate, to be happy and not sad, and the best of all the companionship of good friends over a pocket full of money.
5. Mentally, I remain confident and assured that I am fearfully and wonderfully made for a purpose, and that all my needs — safety, food, shelter — are already provided and within my reach. All I have to do is to receive my share with thanksgiving and not envy others.
6. Sharing and caring is where I find the truly sublime joy and happiness. When I am allowed to, I use the little I know to become a bellyful to others; or even a spring that eliminates life-threatening diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, and HIV/AIDS; or alleviate serious health challenges like fibroids, anaemia and old wounds.
Certainly, happiness is more than just a science that never goes out of season and there is no reason why you should not partake of it every day, regardless of your circumstances. You and all those around you will benefit when you make happiness a lifestyle.
