Hat-trick hero Gordon says he’s ready to lead MBU
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Owayne Gordon has responded to Coach Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis’s call for a goalscorer to replace Dino Williams in the Montego Bay United team, and his hat-trick in Wednesday’s Caribbean Football Union’s Club championship’s Group Three opener against Cayman’s Scholars International at the Montego Bay Sports Complex was timely.
Gordon, who is the top active scorer in the Red Stripe Premier League with 13 goals, one behind former teammate Dino Williams who transferred to NASL team Indy 11 in January, told reporters after Wednesday night’s game he was ready to be the team leader.
“I feel overwhelmed and I have been working hard in training, and I know I had a big task ahead of me and I know the team is looking for a leader, so I have to step up and do my job,” says Gordon, who scored in the 25th, 72nd and 79th minutes in his first CFU Champions League group game after missing last year’s competition.
After taking over the team, Davis had called on players to step up as goalscorers in the absence of Williams, who had scored 14 goals by December.
Gordon had scored some crucial goals in the early part of the season to keep the team at or near the top of the tables. Also, Ronaldo Rodney had scored some timely ones in January, but of late it has been Gordon, who the fans call ‘Pond Turtle,’ who has taken the team on his back.
On Wednesday, he almost single-handedly destroyed the confidence of the Cayman team and later said the game seemed “easy for us”.
“We expected it and we came out and played our roles and should have scored more goals, but we are thankful,” Gordon said.
