Beckett brace propels Harbour View into top four
Harbour View have surged into the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) top four courtesy of a combination of a boardroom decision and their 2-1 win over relegation-bound Waterhouse at Drewsland in a late kick-off on Sunday.
The ‘Stars of the East’ moved to 38 points with their last victory, and swopped places with Humble Lion, who were docked three points by disciplinary decision, which moved them down to sixth on 37 points.
Waterhouse remain entombed at the foot of the 12-team standings with 22 points.
UWI FC, who lost to Rivoli United 4-3, maintained fifth-place with 38 points. Rivoli, now on 27 points, breathed a collective sigh as the three points gave them hope of moving out of the drop zone.
Montego Bay United, who were not in action over the weekend, remain on top of the standings with 55 points, five more than Arnett Gardens (50), who were away for the CFU Club Championship in the Dominican Republic.
Portmore, also with 50 points, are third, while Cavalier sit in seventh place with 32 points, Tivoli (32) are eighth, Boys’ Town are ninth on 31, while Reno are 10th, also with 31 points.
At Drewsland, Nicholas Beckett, who switched from defender to attacker, scored a brace in the 85th and 90+5 minutes to lead Harbour View to victory. Jermaine Anderson scored the Waterhouse go-ahead goal in the 58th minute.
Beckett was pleased with his double that propelled his team into contention for the title.
“We pressed them for the major part of the second half and we got two goals. To me, these goals are very important to the team’s ambition as the result takes us right back into contention for a place in the final top four positions of the competition,” Beckett said.
Harbour View Head Coach Ludlow Bernard said he was thrilled with his team,s application and commitment.
“This display was a mixture of character and perseverance that gave us the victory… even when we fell behind and had a little under 25 minutes of play remaining, I was moved to see the players digging in… saw the Waterhouse players buckling under the pressure,” he said.
Anthony Patrick, back as Waterhouse coach, was disappointed his team was not able to maintain its lead.
“I thought we lost concentration in the final 10 minutes of the game after taking the lead… judging from the heavy underfoot conditions with which they also had to combat and because of this we made some silly mistakes at the back. With the latest result, this means we have to ensure that we win the rest of games to get out of this rut. There is no other way,” Patrick conceded.
Cavalier SC were due to take on Portmore FC at Stadium East in the Monday night game at 8:30 pm.
