Malcolm hoping to continue rich goalscoring form
Arnett Gardens’ in-form striker Kemal ‘Tull’ Malcolm will be hoping to carry his rich goalscoring form into the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship and propel his team to qualification for the CONCACAF Champions League.
Malcolm, 26, who has banged in 12 goals in the local Red Stripe Premier League, is second in the golden boots race behind Dino Williams of Montego Bay United with 14 goals.
“I am in good form, good shape, so I just need to continue doing what I have been doing – the simple stuff – and just get the job done for my team,” Malcolm told the Jamaica Observer.
The former Manning Cup star, who led St George’s College to the title in 2008, attributes his good form to being injury free this season.
“Last season I had two injuries, a groin tear and I had a back injury, so it set me back. But this season I am injury-free, fully fit and the focus is just there right now. It’s just my time,” he noted.
Malcolm, who has been recently invited to the Reggae Boyz training camp, believes Arnett Gardens will go far in this tournament.
“I think we can go all the way, but we don’t know what the opponent is like. We just need to go out there and give 150 per cent. I know once we go on the field it will be business as usual,” said the lightning quick striker.
“Whenever you play in any tournament, the aim is to play amongst the best players, the best team, so my aim is to play amongst the top teams. So we want to go as far as possible in this tournament and play against the MLS teams,” he pointed out.
“You know once you play against the MLS teams a lot of scouts will be at the game and that will be better for the players and even the club,” said Malcolm.
Malcolm, who aims to score at least 20 goals in the local league, said his form has earned him the respect of his peers and fear among the defenders.
“My aim is to help my team retain the title and get the leading goalscorer. But my main focus is just to get the championship back. We have eight games left and I am at 12, so I am looking for 20 goals,” he noted.
“Whenever someone is doing good people will look at you different, and now they are giving me more respect,” he added.
