Missed chances highlight Boys’ Town, Cavalier stalemate
Boys’ Town and Cavalier battled to a 0-0 result in their Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) encounter at Stadium East on Sunday.
Cavalier were playing to their second consecutive drawn game at home while Boys’ Town took a point after two consecutive defeats. Both coaches lamented their teams’ missed chances to take full points that are at a premium at this stage of the competition as neither team is as yet safe from relegation. With the point gained, Cavalier remained in seventh place on 32 points, while Boys’ Town slipped to ninth place on 31 points.
“This is a much better performance than we had for the past two weeks,” Boys’ Town’s Head Coach Andrew Price reasoned. “The return of some of our senior players brought some stability to the unit. Their seniority showed. Wayne Ellis and Daemion Benjamin who I thought played very well together and kept our young players focused for the most part.
“Xavian Virgo also returned to the team from injury; Michael Campbell, he had a particularly good game. Whenever he plays, he is an inspiration to the team and it was just unfortunate for us not to score today (Sunday) as we got gilt-edged chances that we should have put away.
“Rafiek Thomas got some chances that he should have scored with but failed. He is a player who is normally sharper than that. The good thing, though, is that we kept a clean sheet with a point away from home and that is a step in the right direction. From now on, we are going to play hard football for the rest of the season and let us see where it does take us from here,” Price said.
The inability to score what appeared to be easy chances in the game was not a very reassuring display by Cavalier, and Head Coach Rudolph Speid expressed his unreserved disappointment. “It surely was not reassuring. We are very disappointed with this game. We are not disappointed because the match was drawn. We are disappointed because we got some very easy chances that we missed. At this level, those should be going in.”
There were three misses in the second half by Cleon Pryce and Chevon Marsh that were unacceptable. The first one was where the goalkeeper parried a ball into the path of Pryce who failed to score as the young forward succeeded only in kicking the ball over the top with the goalkeeper out of position on the ground.
“Marsh then got one when the goalkeeper left his line and followed a ball in his direction. All he had to do was to lift the ball over the head of the goalkeeper. The third chance again fell to Marsh who faked the ‘keeper after cutting the ball back, but with the goalkeeper on the ground, Marsh failed to convert. Those were the errors that made the game so disappointing for us and the idea that Humble Lion dropped a couple of points in their game would have helped somewhat as we would have moved into seventh place with 33 points to make the fight for a fourth-place finish in the RSPL more interesting,” Speid surmised.
