Former PM Golding assisted JLP in 10 constituencies
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Former Prime Minister Bruce Golding was in 10 constituencies ahead of last Thursday’s general election, campaigning with the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).
Golding, while speaking to Jamaica Observer editors and reporters at its Beechwood Avenue, St Andrew offices on Monday, said he was originally asked to assist the JLP in three constituencies.
“I… ended up working in 10 (constituencies) and happily, all, except one, we won,” Golding said.
The former prime minister said his approach was clinical and practical.
Golding shared that some of the constituencies he worked in had internal problems in relation to critical party functionaries not pulling their weight, while others had weaknesses with their organisation. He pointed out though that common to all the constituencies was the limited resources at their disposal.
He told the Observer that he sat down with campaign teams prior to two weeks before the general election but really went into campaign mode the final two weeks.
“We were very tactical in what we did in every constituency,” Golding said, adding that the JLP was very “strategic and clinical”.
With 62 of the 63 constituencies having been officially recounted up to Monday morning, the JLP maintains a majority 32 seats to the People’s National Party’s 31.
