EOJ to advise GG of official election results by Wednesday
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Release of the official results of Thursday’s general election has been delayed by another 24 hours, Director of Elections Orrette Fisher confirmed this morning.
Fisher told a press briefing at the Electoral Commission of Jamaica’s (ECJ) head office on Red Hills Road in St Andrew that the count is continuing and should be completed later today.
“With the final constituency (Western St Thomas) expected to be completed later today, the Electoral Office is hoping to be able to advise the governor general of the results by Wednesday,” Fisher said.
However, he said that, it must be noted that if there is a magisterial recount for any constituency, the final results can only be declared at the completion of the magisterial recount. Candidates have up to four days to request the magisterial recount
He said that if there is no magisterial recount, the result is sent to the director of elections, who can then ascertain the party with the majority of seats and advise the governor general as well as provide a list of the successful candidates for the clerk to the Houses of Parliament.
