Cheers for Omi
JAMAICAN singer Omi said he is preparing for an international tour in the next couple of months and is bouyed by the release of his album Me 4 U.
He was speaking with Jamaica Observer after his well-received live performance at Moon Palace Jamaica Resort and Spa in Ocho Rios, St Ann, on Saturday night. “I’m currently planning a world tour,” he told the Observer.
Omi — who performed with pop star Taylor Swift in California on her 1989 Tour last year — said he avoided touring due to a lack of material, as his only hit was the runaway single Cheerleader.
Released in October 2015, the 14-track Me 4 U is produced by Ultra Records under exclusive licence to Columbia Records. The Clarendon-born singer used Saturday’s performance to introduce his audience to his other works and they couldn’t get enough.
In front of a mostly international audience, the singer gave a pitch-perfect professional hour-long set that had the crowd breaking out their cell phones to capture his smooth performance.
He was helped by a rather extensive production set-up, with multiple screens and lighting. “Omi is the first in the series of big name acts scheduled for concerts.
We hope to cement Moon Palace as an entertainment destination and the number one entertainment spot on the island,” said Clifton Reader, general manager of Moon Palace Jamaica Grande Resort.
The crowd remained engaged as there were brief pauses between the songs to allow Omi to interact with the willing audience, but never long enough to get boring.
He set a steady pace and comfortably whipped through his material, including Fireworks, Sing It Out Loud and Drop in the Ocean.
He even fit in a cover version of Sam Smith’s I’m Not The Only One, before sealing the deal with a double dose of his latest platinum hit Hula Hoop and the multi-record- setting Cheerleader.
He started the original version and was joined by United Kingdombased dancer Symonè, who brought the Felix Jaehn remix. Omi conceded to the demands of his fans for a quick encore. “The song has opened a lot of doors for me internationally,” he said.
