Anticlimax – No fireworks as MBU-UWI feature contest ends 0-0
Leaders Montego Bay United and inform UWI FC played to a dull 0-0 scoreline in their Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) encounter at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Bowl yesterday.
Both teams ended with 10 players as tempers flared late in the contest. Ladale Richie of Montego Bay United was sent off in the 87th minute and Daniel Gilzene of UWI FC in the 89th.
Despite the draw, Montego Bay United remained atop the 12-team standings on 55 points, while UWI remain in the hunt for a semi-final spot in fifth place on 38 points.
With both teams coming in on a rich run of form, it was expected to be an intriguing contest.
However, that did not materialise, as there was very little to talk about in the opening 45 minutes with both teams being pretty flat throughout.
Most of the action was kept in the middle of the park, which took away any real promise of an entertaining contest. The minimal action in the attacking third came when Montego Bay United went on a counter with a three-against-one blitz, but UWI defender Dravian Williams did well to stand his ground and to pull apart any goalscoring chance.
The hosts responded shortly after when Girvon Brown snuck a pass through to Anthony Grant who was denied by a fine save from custodian Jacomeno Barrett.
Montego Bay United came close on the stroke of the interval when Lesly St Fleur’s shot from distance was blocked by Amal Knight in goal for UWI FC, and a follow-up shot by Donovan Carey on the rebound was well handled by the defence.
In other early games, Reno FC and Humble Lion played to a 1-1 score line at Frome, while second-placed Portmore United went down 0-1 to Tivoli Gardens at the Edward Seaga Complex.
