Jamaicans urged to reduce salt intake
JAMAICANS are being urged by the Diabetes Association of Jamaica to reduce their sodium intake to five grams daily, as the group gets ready to observe Salt Awareness Week from February 29 to March 5.
Executive Director of the Association Lurline Less, advises people to read nutrition labels available on various products to be informed, and to consult with a nutritionist.
“Be aware of the levels of salt that you should be taking in, the impact of salt on high blood pressure and the complications of high blood pressure in the long run,” she told JIS News.
Complications of high blood pressure may result in stroke, heart disease and kidney failure. The latter two have been on the increase and is very costly, Less said.
“We take blood pressure very lightly. Until (people’s) head ache they do not go and take their medication. We need to change that culture,” she emphasised.
During Salt Awareness Week, the association will partner with the National Health Fund, through Drug Serv pharmacies, to conduct a number of blood pressure screenings at various locations, including the Bustamante Hospital for Children and Drug Serv, Greater Portmore, St Catherine, to name a few.
“We’ll be handing out brochures and advising people of the importance of reducing salt in their diets as it relates to blood pressure problems,” Less said.
“Heightening awareness will ultimately bring about a healthier lifestyle to individuals and preserve their quality of life,” she added.
