Bubbly UWI welcome leaders Montego Bay
University of the West Indies (UWI) FC will continue their chase for a semi-final place when they host Red Stripe Premier league leaders (RSPL) Montego Bay United in today’s match at Mona Bowl in St Andrew.
Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
UWI, first-timers in the nation’s top flight football competition, are fifth in the RSPL points table with 37 points from 26 games. The Marcel Gayle-coached team, which has won three of its last five games, is only two points behind Humble Lion FC, the side currently occupying the fourth and final spot to the semi-finals.
Montego Bay, the RSPL winners a couple of seasons ago, are out front with 54 points from 27 matches. The Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis-conditioned outfit appears to be in imperious form, winning four games on the trot.
It will be – in an already remarkable season – a huge achievement for UWI if they can steal a victory against the former champions.
UWI’s Assistant Coach Andrew Peart said progression to the semis is very much on their minds.
“We are hunting a spot in the top four and we can’t hide our ambition. Where we are now and with seven games remaining, relegation is not a big danger, so we have shifted focus,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
“We are at home and we will treat it like any other home game. We want to win and we know Montego Bay will come hard because they want to end the [preliminary] rounds as high as possible,” Peart said.
In another game scheduled to start at 3 o’ clock, 10th-placed Tivoli Gardens FC (29 points) welcome third-placed Portmore United (47 points) to Edward Seaga Sports Complex.
Also at 3:00 pm, ninth-placed FC Reno (30 points) entertain Humble Lion FC (39 points) at Frome Sports Complex in Westmoreland.
At 5:00 pm, Cavalier SC, who are seventh with 31 points, take on visitors Boys’ Town FC at Stadium East football field. Boys’ Town are eighth with 30 points.
In the live, televised RSPL Monday Night fixture set to start 8:40 pm tomorrow, semi-final aspirants Harbour View FC host relegation-threatened Rivoli United at Harbour View Mini-Stadium.
Former champions Harbour View, who have failed to win any of their last three games, are sixth with 34 points, while Rivoli are languishing in 11th place with 23 points.
