#DecisionJa2016: Fisher explains why names would not be on voters’ list
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Electoral Commission of Jamaica says it has received reports that a number of people who turned up to vote in their respective constituencies did not see their names on the voters’ list.
“They are being told that their names are on the list on the outside but not on the list on the inside,” Director of Elections Orette Fisher told the press on Thursday. “We will again state for the record that on nomination day, we are required to give parties what we call the full list, — this is the the list with everybody.
“Within seven days after nomination day we are required to give the desegregated list, which remove police, military and election day workers, so a number of agents are outside with the full list and therefore the names of the police, military and election day workers would not be on that list,” he said.
Fisher explained that there were a number of people who applied to be election day workers and were told beforehand that if they applied, their names may be extracted from the election day listing.
He said this means that although these people may have dropped out, their names would have already been extracted from the election day list.
He added that policemen were also guilty of this, because despite numerous advertisements that they were to cast their votes on Monday, turned up today expecting to participate in the electoral process, but their names would not have been on the voters’ list.
“I know of three serving policemen who called and it was clear that their names were on the Monday list, but they still expected it to be there today so they were unable to vote, that is the reason for that discrepancy,” Fisher stated.
