#DecisionJa2016: Comrades, Labourites camp out in Linstead
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — Scores of party faithfuls are camped outside Linstead Primary School in St Catherine North Western awaiting the tally of the ballots.
Councillor for the Linstead Division, Herbert Garriques of the People’s National Party (PNP) said the move is to ensure that most things are under control and that there is no breach of electoral protocols.
“There are about eight ballot boxes at the Linstead Primary School polling station and this is the strongest area in Linstead so, of course, it is important to ensure that things run smoothly on the ground,” Garriques said.
He said at this point there is no doubt that the PNP incumbent Bobby Pickersgill will retain his seat.
“There is no question about whether or not Pickersgill will be returned to his seat; the question is, by how much,” Garriques quipped.
He said that while Pickersgill could have done more, many have benefitted from his representation in the constituency.
“Pickersgill has done much in the area in terms of infrastructure and assisting with educating the youth at all levels of the education system,” Garriques said.
In reference to the rival Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), he said the supporters are harbouring false hopes of winning.
“What I am particularly thankful for is the friendly rivalry that we have always been able to enjoy in Linstead,” the councillor added.
