#DecisionJa2016: Amos supporters cry foul
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) supporters in St Catherine North Western are complaining that the names of some of their duly registered voters are not appearing on the lists at the polling stations.
Political Liason Officer for the JLP Samantha Woolcock said people have been turning up with their electoral IDs to vote for the party only to be told they cannot.
“We have to call the EOJ office for them to sort it out,” she said.
Another JLP Election Day worker Loraine Henriques accused the Electoral of Jamaica (EOJ) representatives of not knowing their jobs.
“All a Clarendon them send one of wi voters,” she said.
She explained that one mentally challenged woman was being denied her right to vote despite being a registered electorate.
According to Henriques, the law allows for someone of the woman’s choosing to take an oath that they are casting a ballot on her behalf.
“If mi wasn’t dere the EOJ woman wouldn’t call the EOJ office, but when she call dem tell har say is so it guh and dats how the woman was allowed to vote,” she said.
But despite those hitches the workers said they were extremely satisfied with the turnout so far of their supporters.
The People’s National Party (PNP) chairman Robert Pickersgill is seeking to stave off a defeat from the JLP’s Newton Amos, who is said to have gained great momentum in the constituency.
The PNP political liason officer Leon Daley said things are going smoothly and he was expecting the traffic to increase later in the day.
Meanwhile, Detective Inspector Steadman Bailey said the police was not expecting any disturbance in the constituency despite him having received reports that masked gunmen were seen driving around in a section of the constituency.
“Base on our deployment we are making sure that in case of any eventualities we can respond,” he said.
