Vote for prosperity, Holness appeals to Jamaica
Leader of the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Andrew Holness last night made an impassioned plea to uncommitted voters and those who are “turned off” to give him an opportunity to lead the country on a pathway to prosperity.
“Tonight I appeal to all Jamaicans to come out and vote for a future of prosperity. To the turned-off, give it another try. With the uncommitted not voting this will not change things for the better. The only way to change is to come out and vote for change,” he urged thousands of cheering JLP supporters at a campaign rally in Half-Way-Tree.
“I’m committed to you. I commit my family to give myself in full service, and everything I do I will do for you,” he said before inviting his wife, who is a candidate, his mother, and mother-in law to the podium.
Holness made the appeal after he staunchly defended his party’s tax plan to remove income tax from people who earn $1.5 million and under annually.
Holness explained that in 2011 he told Jamaicans the truth that there would be a rough time ahead, but only for a short time, following which the economy would start to grow.
Now, he said, everywhere he goes people say they have regretted the decision not to give his party that opportunity.
“Now you have a chance to make it right again. You have a chance to repair that damage,” he said.
Holness said, although his party has announced a 10-point economic growth plan, the proposal which is giving the ruling People’s National Party a heart attack is the $1.5 million initiative.
But Holness said the JLP’s plans are based on solid economics and Jamaicans should not allow anybody to tell them otherwise.
“When the economy is contracted, that is when government must give a stimulus, must do something to promote spending,” he said.
“It is now time to make you a part of the prosperity. We need to give you back something in your pocket so you can play your part in the prosperity of Jamaica,” he said.
