RSPL leaders seek to extend lead
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Red Stripe Premier League leaders Montego Bay United will this evening seek to end the four- game unbeaten run of strugglers Tivoli Gardens when they meet in a third-round game at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, starting at 8:00 pm.
Twenty-two points and nine places separate the two teams with the hosts on 51 points from 26 games and are unbeaten in the last six games, while Tivoli Gardens, who are trying to escape the relegation zone, are on 29 points, seven above the danger zone.
Title-chasing Montego Bay United are coming off an impressive 4-0 thrashing of Boys’ Town in Kingston on Sunday, and will be seeking a third straight win over Tivoli Gardens, after beating them by 2-0 margins in the first two rounds.
Allan Ottey has scored in his last two games and appears to be getting back into some competitive form after a leg injury kept him out of action for over a month.
Ottey, Owayne Gordon and Ronald Rodney are expected to lead the Montego Bay United attack against Tivoli Gardens who have shown marked improvements since Glendon ‘Admiral’Bailey took over from Chris Bender.
Tivoli Gardens have won their last three games and will come to Montego Bay with some confidence that they can extend their winning run and beat the back-to-back finalists.
Montego Bay United’s coach Paul ‘Tegat’Davis, who has his eyes set on the regular season and play-off titles, has whipped the team into fighting shape and has demanded more urgency after a lacklustre 2-1 win over FC Reno last week Wednesday.
The team responded with four goals on Sunday, with Gordon firing them into a 2-0 lead after just 10 minutes to boost his league tally of goals to 11.
