#DecisionJa2016: JMMB distances itself from Khia Duncan’s rant
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Money Market Brokers (JMMB) Group has distanced itself from comments made by Dr Khia Josina Duncan during a rant on Twitter Monday night.
Khia, who is the sister of JMMB Group CEO Keith Duncan and Executive Director Donna Duncan-Scott, made comments on her Twitter page regarding Andrew Holness’ disclosure about his St Andrew property purchase yesterday evening.
Holness had earlier outlined, in a statement to the media, where the money came from to build his Beverly Hills, St Andrew home, which has been a talking point of the People’s National Party.
In his financial disclosure, he said that he had used funds from his accounts at two institutions, one of which is JMMB, to finance the purchase of the property on which his house is being built.
Khia replied to a comment accusing another user of being ‘badmind’ of Andrew Holness’ house by stating: “Not only that he made money from JMMB and he is now campaigning against the family that help to build his castle.”
She then proceeded to delete her tweet and make her account private after coming under heavy fire from social media users for her tweet.
Attorney-at-law and former Jamaica Labour Party government minister Clive Mullings also responded to Khia’s comment saying: “Be very careful. Highly inappropriate.”
Khia is also the sister of Imani Duncan-Price, who is facing off with Holness’ wife, Juliet, in the campaign for the St Andrew East Rural seat. Duncan-Price resigned as the chief strategic officer at JMMB in December of last year.
The JMMB Group issued a full statement on their Facebook page last night, stating that “Khia Josina Duncan’s views are her own, and not those of JMMB”.
They went on to state that the group supports the political process in Jamaica by contributing equally to each of the major political parties.
Following the backlash on Twitter, Khia made a post to her Facebook page stating that she is not employed to the financial institution while also apologising to JMMB and its clients for any confusion her comment would’ve caused by referencing the institution.
She also said the views expressed on social media are her own.
