Waterhouse suffer crippling loss to Tivoli
Tivoli Gardens FC rubbed salt into the wounds of Waterhouse FC when the West Kingston team handed the Drewsland-based team a crippling 1-0 home defeat in a Red Stripe Premier League third-round game on Sunday.
With the latest defeat, fans were not amused and voiced their discontent at the end of Sunday’s game, some even calling for the head of coach Paul Young.
In the game, Donovan Dawkins scored the all-important goal in minute 34 in a scrappy affair which saw four yellow cards being issued to Waterhouse and two to Tivoli Gardens.
With both teams desperate for three points in their flailing campaign, play was ragged throughout, but Tivoli Gardens were faster to the ball and looked more dangerous on the attack.
Tivoli Gardens assistant coach Damion Gordon was relieved to get the three vital points that provided oxygen in their effort to stave off relegation.
“It is just a case of survival. We did what we came here to do and that was to leave with three points. We knew we had to win this game and we came out fighting for every ball.
“Team spirit and the hunger to win we have rediscovered, and we just have to keep climbing and keep going,” Gordon said.
Embattled Waterhouse coach Young was forlorn at the end.
“It was a difficult loss at home and I thought we had the better chances in the game, but that is how it is,” he said.
Waterhouse, meanwhile, could have been punished further had it not been for the industry of their defence. At one point, Nicholy Finlayson headed clear a goal-bound strike from Cornelius Simms in the second half.
However, three of the best chances in the game fell to Waterhouse’s Kemar Beckford, who failed to hit the target twice with an open goal. He also missed with a header.
