#DecisionJa2016: Phillips describes Holness’ 10-point plan as ‘puss in a bag’
MANCHESTER, Jamaica — People’s National Party campaign director and Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips described Opposition Leader Andrew Holness’ 10-point plan as a “puss in a bag scheme”.
Phillips, while addressing hundreds of PNP supporters in Mandeville square, Manchester, a short while ago, said Holness’ plans can only be considered good if feasible.
“That is a good thing to happen if it can happen… yuh affi ask dem how much it will cost…[but] dem not certain,” Phillips said.
He said Holness’ plan to increase the income tax threshold to $1.5 million in addition to doubling the minimum wage would cost the country some $68 billion.
Phillips said to finance such a plan, the country would have to borrow more than it can.
“They are telling us in their own way that they are tearing up the plan that Jamaica has with the IMF (International Monetary Fund),” he said, adding that the General Consumption Tax would have to double for such a plan to work.
“It is a puss in a bag, samfy scheme… don’t make them fool you,” he charged.
“We are making steady, steady progress; we have not promised anything that we have not done,” said Phillips.
