‘Tegat’ hopping mad after unimpressive MoBay win
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Despite winning 2-1 and completing a season sweep of fellow western-based Red Stripe Premier League team FC Reno at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Wednesday, Montego Bay United’s coach Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis was livid with what he described as “an indisciplined” display by his team.
With national coach Winfried Schaeffer looking on from the stands, first-half goals from Allan Ottey and Jermaine Woozencroft carried Montego Bay to a comfortable win and 48 points, leaping over defending champions Arnett Gardens to retake the lead, but that was not enough for Davis.
An own goal in time added on at the end of the second half gifted FC Reno some respectability, but they remained in eighth place on 30 points.
Montego Bay United beat FC Reno in all three meetings in the Red Stripe Premier League this season, 3-2 at Frome and 2-0 in their second-round meeting, also at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
“I am so angry… we played indisciplined football today, we won, yes, and I am happy for the three points, but overall we were indisciplined and we must talk about this (Thursday) in training,” Davis told the Jamaica Observer.
Asked to expand, Davis said: “They just went through the motions. I don’t know if it’s because it’s Reno why they were just going through the motions… it does not look good for professionals. This is not joke time now.”
After being outclassed in the first 45 minutes, FC Reno had a better second half, making three changes early in the second period, and coach Michael Graham said they lost the game in the first half.
“We were giving away the football, turning it over and giving it back to Montego Bay United and giving them the chance to run at us and expose us,” he said.
“MoBay attacked with four or five players, that’s what got to us in the first half, but we nullified that to some extent in the second half, but they still got through and we were lucky,” he said.
After creating some good early scoring chances, Ottey put Montego Bay United ahead in the eighth minute with his first goal in months, beating goalkeeper Devaughn Hawthorne with a screamer from the left flank as the ball flew into the far corner.
Owayne Gordon missed a scoring chance in the 21st minute after a good individual effort from Ottey, who dribbled from the half-line, wormed his way past two defenders, and then put the ball on a platter for his teammate who was bundled off the ball just inside the 18-yard area.
A brilliant save and some luck from Hawthorne in the 23rd minute kept Montego Bay United from adding to their lead. Gordon powered his way down the right flank, but his powerful shot was blocked high in the air by Hawthorne, and then the ball fell inches from the FC Reno goal line, but a defender was well placed to guide the ball back to Hawthorne.
FC Reno were not so lucky in the 45th minute when a shot from Woozencroft hit a defender and looped into the air and into the goal as the home team doubled their advantage.
The visitors made two changes at the start of the second half, one forced as Hawthorne hobbled off, but his replacement Joel Johnson was equal to anything that was thrown at him.
In addition to Kaycee Bromfield replacing Maliki Reid in the 46th minute, Afiba Chambers also came on in the 57th minute for FC Reno in place of Anthony Marks, and this appeared to give the visitors more confidence.
In one instance, Roshane Sharpe lifted a ball over the Montego Bay United crossbar in the 55th minute and Jacomeno Barrett was forced to make his first save in the 70th minute.
Montego Bay United should have scored at least two more, however, as substitute Cory Hylton hit the upright in the 75th minute after Gordon had set him up nicely in front of the goal.
Six minutes later, Gordon just missed with a flying header after Ottey raced to the left touchline and crossed the ball to the right side.
With virtually the last action three minutes into time added, Montego Bay United’s defender John Barrett inadvertently turned a ball past his own goalkeeper.
