Negus aims to chronicle his success
Born in Guyana and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, deejay Negus makes no secret of his passion for Jamaican dancehall music.
The 34-year-old artiste has called Toronto, Canada home for the past nine years. From there, he operates the Street Platinum label.
Negus is currently pushing the Chronicles of Success beat which has songs by a number of artistes including himself. His song on it is I Wanna Know.
“It’s a bit of a conscious ‘riddim’ but I took a different angle an’ did a lovers rock song. Kind of a mellow vibe,” he told Splash.
Most of Negus’s songs, like Blush and Never Forget Where mi From, are produced by Street Platinum. The former was done on the Bicycle Frame riddim which was released last year.
Negus was born Alwin Nurse in Georgetown, the Guyana capital. He lived several years in Trinidad’s San Juan community (just outside Port of Spain) before migrating to Canada.
It is where he launched his recording career. While not as trendy as New York City or London, he said dancehall artistes and producers can make a name in Toronto.
“The scene here is good, there’s lots of parties and clubs that play strictly dancehall,” he said.
Most of Street Platinum’s productions are released jointly by YGR Records, an independent company from Ocho Rios.
