WHO: No travel restrictions for Zika
THE World Health Organization (WHO) says it will not be issuing any travel restrictions related to the Zika virus.
In a Twitter post Wednesday night, the WHO said women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant must decide the level of risk they wish to take with regards to the Zika virus and plan accordingly.
“In particular, they should: Be informed about Zika and other mosquito-transmitted diseases; protect themselves from mosquito bites; consult their doctor or local health authority about travelling in an area where Zika is present; mention their travel plans during their prenatal check-ups; and consult their health care provider for close monitoring of their pregnancy upon returning from travel.”
The main concern for pregnant women is the link of Zika to Microcephaly, a rare neurological condition in which a baby is born with a very small head.
Brazil, which is grappling with cases of Microcephaly, and Colombia are the countries most affected by the mosquito-borne disease in the Americas. Cases have also been identified in Europe and there were reports Wednesday that a case had been confirmed in China.
