PM demands apology from Holness over ‘con artist’ comment
THE attorney for Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has written to Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) leader Andrew Holness seeking an apology and damages for a statement he allegedly made during a television interview on Tuesday.
Holness was responding to comments made by Simpson Miller where she made reference to his “10-point plan” as a “10-point con” during a political rally in Yallahs square, St Thomas, on Sunday.
The St Andrew West Central incumbent allegedly used the term “con artist” in his response and proceeded to list instances in which promises made by the People’s National Party in their 2011 campaign were not fulfilled.
In the letter to Holness, Simpson Miller’s attorney, Bert Samuels, is demanding: “… a suitably worded apology, approved by our client be published on Television Jamaica, in the Jamaica Observer and The Gleaner and that our client be paid damages commensurate with her station in life locally and internationally, along with his (her attorney) legal costs.”
The letter also stated that the apology, when issued, will not automatically absolve Holness from an obligation to pay damages to Simpson Miller.
Holness has been given three days to respond to the letter, stating his intent to enter negotiations.
Efforts to contact the Opposition leader proved futile, but a member of his campaign team told the Jamaica Observer that they saw mention of the claim in the media.
However, the campaign team member declined to comment further as the issue is now a legal matter.
