Holness says internal polls put JLP ahead
JAMAICA Labour Party (JLP) leader Andrew Holness says that internal polls have shown that there has been a recent swing to the party, which will deliver several surprises in the February 25 General Election.
Answering questions from the press yesterday after being nominated to contest St Andrew West Central constituency for the fifth consecutive time, he said that the JLP is continuing to do its polling and that he will be releasing the results shortly.
“I have already released one poll about how the people feel about the Government’s management of the chikingunya issue, and how they fear whether or not the Government will be able to manage the ZIKV threat,” Holness said.
“Our polls have shown that that there is a swing to the JLP, and you are going to see some surprises,” he stated.
“What the polls also picked up is that the PNP is spending to try and buy the election, and there is a certain percentage of the electorate that responds to that. In fact, because they are so frustrated they say, ‘I don’t know that there will be changes. So, just give me what you are giving me, now’. But, that is dangerous, because what it does is that it could entrench a government that doesn’t listen to you,” he cautioned.
However, Holness said that the polls also show that such a view is held by a small five per cent of the electorate.
“The majority of the people want to hear about the issues, and our 10-point plan was crafted based on our polls, and it is giving the PNP a nightmare. We are going to respond to Peter Phillips on Thursday and, when we do, Peter Phillips will hang his head in shame, because, as a minister of finance he should have all the particulars on what we have put out, because he has the data,” he stated.
The nomination of both Holness and his competitor, the PNP’s Patrick Roberts took place at Waltham Education Centre.
