Portmore seek response as RSPL’s third round kicks off
The contest between Humble Lion FC and visitors Portmore United is set to be one of the highlights in today’s start to the third round of the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) football competition.
Kick-off is slated for 5:00 pm at Effortville Community Centre in Clarendon.
Portmore, who have won four of their last five games, are top of the league with 43 points from 22 games, while fourth-placed Humble Lion have 32 points.
Humble Lion enjoyed a good run throughout the first half of the 2015-16 season, but three losses in their last five outings have slowed their march to secure a semi-final spot.
They will have to pull their act together if they are to get the better of Portmore, who will be anxious to return to winning ways after falling 1-2 to Arnett Gardens FC in their previous match.
In another intriguing match-up, 10th-placed Waterhouse FC (20 points) and third-placed Montego Bay United (41 points) lock horns at Drewsland Mini-Stadium, starting at 6:00 pm.
Despite the huge disparity in their respective fortunes this season, a clash between the two usually attracts lots of attention. The Montego Bay team stunned Waterhouse 5-2 in the 2013-14 final, and followed up with an easy victory over two legs in last season’s semi-finals against the Drewsland-based team. But Waterhouse, expected to be buoyed by playing in front of their home fans, are unlikely to be easy pushovers.
In a contest between old rivals, title-holders Arnett Gardens FC host Tivoli Gardens FC at Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, beginning at 6:00 pm. Arnett are second in the 12-team standing with 42 points, while relegation-threatened Tivoli Gardens are 11th with 19 points from 21 games.
At 3:00 pm, eighth-placed Boys’ Town FC (27 points) welcome last-placed Rivoli United (19 points) to Barbican Sports Complex.
Also at 3 o’ clock ninth-placed FC Reno (24 points) entertain seventh-placed Cavalier SC (27 points) to Frome Sports Complex in Westmoreland.
In tomorrow’s live televised Monday Night encounter, hosts Harbour View FC take on University of the West Indies (UWI) FC at Harbour View Mini-Stadium.
Harbour View are fifth with 30 points, while UWI, who have the same number of points as their opponents, trail in sixth place only due to an inferior goal difference.
