Arnett, Tivoli set for another blockbuster
It might not be as dramatic as the Charles Dickens masterpiece
A Tale of Two Cities, depicting contrasting happenings in London and Paris. But the difference in fortunes of Arnett Gardens and Tivoli Gardens in the 2015-16 Red Stripe Premier League season draws comparison.
Arnett Gardens, the defending champions, are sitting pretty in second spot on 42 points and appear to be sailing smoothly to yet another play-off spot.
Tivoli Gardens are at the other end of the spectrum, lying dangerously in 11th spot on 19 points and facing relegation.
Arnett Gardens have won six of their last seven games, while Tivoli Gardens have lost seven of their last eight games.
Both teams will meet on Sunday at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex at 6:00 pm and despite the 23 points and nine places seprating them, it is expected to be a tough encounter.
Arnett’s Head Coach Jerome Waite, who was awarded at the recent RJR Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year function for his service to football, expects a typical derby encounter.
“Confidence is a factor, but when Tivoli play against Arnett it’s different and we are pretty much looking for a tough game,” said Waite, at a press conference at Red Stripe’s headquarters on Thursday.
Both teams have shared a victory each this season. Tivoli Gardens won the first encounter 3-2 on October 18 at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, before Arnett returned the favour on January 10 with a 3-2 victory of their own.
Tivoli Gardens’ manager Brian Rose said his team has its hands full, but will be fighting to the end to secure three valuable points in their quest to avoid relegation.
“As you see, we are not in the best of form right now. We are having a poor season and coming up against Arnett will be another tough game,” he noted.
“The morale of the team is a little bit low, but we will try our best to motivate the players. It will be a tough game, but we need three points, because right now, we are in the doldrums so we will have to go up to Arnett and fight for those three points,” Rose added.
Despite having a game in hand, the five-time champions are in a dangerous spot.
“Any team in this position would be worried because it’s not a familiar position for Tivoli Gardens to be in and we are very uncomfortable right now and hope that things change as quickly as possible,” said Rose.
“We lost the Jackie Bell yesterday [on Wednesday] and the players understand that they will have to dig deeper than they are doing right now. Unfortunately, we are not scoring, so we will have to do some offensive work,” he noted.
