‘Tegat’ returns to MBU with high hopes
TUCKER, St James — Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis says he has his work cut out for him as he takes over as head coach of Red Stripe Premier League club Montego Bay United.
“I need to learn the system they play first,” he told the Jamaica Observer yesterday morning, a day after watching the former champions and back-to-back finalists beat Rivoli United at WesPow Park.
“They play a different system, but there is a strong bond with the players and we all need to get on the same page,” he said.
President Orville Powell confirmed the appointment yesterday and said “it was fitting that Tegat is the man to get the job”, alluding to the fact that Davis was the man who took the then Seba United back to the Premier League before a name change to Montego Bay United in the 2011/12 season.
Davis, who coached Clarendon College in the last ISSA daCosta Cup season, will be in charge of his third team at this level, having previously he coached Village United and Arnett Gardens.
Both Davis and Powell agreed on the team’s goals to win both the regular season and the overall titles.
Davis, who was a much-feared striker in his playing days at Clarendon College and Seba United, and in the national team, told the
Observer one of his main jobs would be to find strikers who believe in him and who he can trust.
With the departure of Dino Williams, who leads the Red Stripe Premier League scoring table with 14 goals, Davis said: “I am going to be working closely with the strikers and will have to dig deep to find those players who will get us goals.”
He added that, “It can’t be one player who will carry the scoring burden, but more than one who we can depend on.”
Additionally, he said he would be looking to return to the hard-running football “that we used to see at MoBay United”.
“The football is good, but I think they might need more fitness so they can play the game I want to see,” said Davis.
After Williams, Owayne Gordon, who had a fast start, is next with eight goals, while Ronaldo Rodney has scored the club’s last two goals from open play — a consolation in a 1-2 loss to Arnett Gardens and the second in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Rivoli United.
Montego Bay United, who were second in the points table after their game on Sunday, have scored 34 goals so far, the most in the league. They have registered two more goals than Arnett Gardens who have played a game less and have also conceded 13, the least in the league.
