Harbour View snap Cavalier’s winning streak
Harbour View FC staged a surging second-half attack that ended a miserable and winless second round with a 3-1 win against Cavalier SC in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) at the Compound on Sunday.
Goals from Jorginho James, Brian Brown and second-half substitute Kevaughn Frater netted for Harbour View, while second-half substitute Dwayne Smith consoled Cavalier with a late added-time strike.
The win has helped Harbour View maintain their fifth-place position on the RSPL standing on 30 points, the same as the UWI who earlier defeated Tivoli Gardens 1-0. Harbour View, Cavalier and UWI began the round by nestling on 27 points apiece at fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, but with Harbour View and UWI registering wins, Harbour View maintain their position at fifth while UWI, by virtue of also winning, moved up one place to sixth, with Cavalier slipping to seventh.
In their three previous games, Harbour View were bundled over twice with a single drawn game for comfort. And they began the match on Sunday in a similar manner that suggested that they were heading for further disaster, but some inept display in the Harbour View goal area from, especially Cleon Pryce and Andre Dawson, wasted first half opportunities with aimless kicking. At one point Pryce got the clearest of chances at Mark Bryan, the Harbour View man between the uprights, to put the visitors ahead after he had outstripped the Harbour View defence that was well manned. Pryce, however, succeeded only in passing the ball to Bryan. Up to that point and after, the hosts’ goal area was well marshalled by Nicholas Beckett, Rosario Harriott and Montrose Phinn and Mark Miller.
As the first half neared its end, the action shifted to the other end of the spectrum and Harbour View began to show glimpses of what could be in store on the resumption of play in the second half as Sheldon McCoy wasted a lively look-in by ballooning the ball out of play. Earlier Harbour View had another look at the Cavalier goal when at about the 34th minute Beckett went close with a headed attempt that went just wide.
The second was a different story. Probably hearing the news that the UWI had defeated Tivoli Gardens 1-0 to move into the fifth spot, Harbour View returned more focused and within seven minutes of the restart, James, who was returning from a red card suspension against Rivoli United FC, started the reversal that ended with a Frater goal that slipped between the legs of goalkeeper Walters two minutes after replacing Brown who had earlier scored Harbour View’s second goal.
