MBU confident of three points against visiting Rivoli
Last season’s finalists Montego Bay United will look to adapt to yet another coaching adjustment when they take on Rivoli United in today’s Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) match at Wespow Park in St James.
Kick-off is set for 3:00 pm.
Montego Bay, who are third in the points standings with 38 points from 21 matches, were not able to secure the relevant documents in time for Brazilian Leonardo Leiva to fulfill his duty as head coach.
Leiva, who joined Montego Bay in November 2015, was said to have left the island on Friday. Full responsibility now falls on the shoulders of Assistant Coach Dillon Thelwell, who stood in for Leiva on the sideline since the Brazilian was not permitted to do so. Leiva was brought in to replace American Timothy Hankinson.
Despite Montego Bay’s coaching shuffle, struggling Rivoli will be hard-pressed to take anything away from the encounter.
Thelwell said the key is to motivate the players after getting only one point from their two last outings – both away from home.
“I just have to motivate the players and get them focused and in tune for this game. We are looking toward three points. For three months I’ve been working like I’m the head coach even though I’m the assistant, so it’s not a new thing for me.
“We lost to Arnett and drew at Waterhouse. Those last two results haven’t gone our way, but the players are happy to return home, and it’s just a matter of time before we get back on track,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Rivoli, who have drawn their last five games, are tied down in one of two relegation places in 11th position on 19 points from 20 games.
But their last outing — a 1-1 home result against title-holders Arnett Gardens — was one that brought satisfaction.
Marlon Williams, the assistant to Rivoli Head Coach Harold Thomas, said the gritty display against Arnett was a healthy sign. He said he would be satisfied with a point away to Montego Bay, the 2013-14 champions.
“We know Montego Bay is a very good team, but my team is good mentally and physically. We are very strong and we are going to continue to fight. To get one point away from home will be good, but if we get a win it would be a plus… we would be laughing. Looking how these boys played Arnett we know we can play MoBay in a similar way,” Williams told the Sunday Observer.
Tivoli Gardens FC, another team undergoing a coaching shake-up, are set to welcome surprise package University of the West Indies (UWI) FC to Edward Seaga Sports Complex, starting at 3:00 pm.
Tivoli Gardens, wallowing in 10th position on 19 points from 20 games, have parted ways with Head Coach Christopher Bender after losing three straight. His assistant Damion Gordon is likely to take over in the interim.
Tivoli have sorted an issue with the field at the Seaga Complex after sewage overflow from a nearby housing scheme went onto the playing area and forced a postponement in last weekend’s clash against Rivoli United.
The first-time premier league entrants UWI, under the guidance of Head Coach Marcel Gayle, are seventh with 27 points. They have lost only one of their last five games.
At Frome Sports Complex in Westmoreland, the hosts FC Reno, who have lost their last three games, take on Boys’ Town FC in a 3 pm kick-off.
Reno are ninth with 23 points, while Boys’ Town, who have lost two of their last three, are eighth with 26 points.
Also at 3 o’ clock, fourth-placed Humble Lion FC (32 points), led by Technical Director Vassel Reynolds, entertain floundering Waterhouse FC at Effortville Community Centre in Clarendon. The Paul Young-coached Waterhouse are last in the table with 17 points.
At 6:30 pm, former champions Harbour View FC, in fifth position, welcome sixth-placed Cavalier SC to Harbour View Mini-Stadium.
Both teams are on 27 points and also have an identical goal difference, but Harbour View have the edge due to a higher number of goals scored.
In the live, televised Monday night clash, first-placed Portmore United travel to Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex to battle second-placed Arnett Gardens in an 8:40 pm start.
Former national champions Portmore, who earned promotion this season after a year out in the cold, have been the most consistent team this campaign in compiling 43 points. Arnett (39 points), exciting to watch most times, but flat on a few occasions, can cut the deficit to just one point if they pull off a home win.
