MBU look to rebound against wounded Waterhouse
Montego Bay United will look to rebound from their loss over the weekend when they visit Waterhouse FC in midweek Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) football action at Drewsland Mini-Stadium today.
The game is slated to start at 6:00 pm.
Montego Bay’s 1-2 defeat away to champions Arnett Gardens FC on Sunday, which knocked them off the top of the points standing, was only their third loss of the season. They are third on 37 points from 20 games.
If current form is anything to go by, Montego Bay, led by interim coach Dillon Thelwell, might count an additional three points. Waterhouse, who have won only three games so far this season, are rooted at the foot of the table with 16 points. Their last five games have seen them draw three games and lose two.
But that form could matter little as wounded Waterhouse are desperate for points to help them move away from relegation mire.
Also instructive is that the Drewsland-based team has failed to win since former Reggae Boy Paul Young took charge on the sidelines. Of those four games, which include a 0-0 result away to Boys’ Town FC on Sunday, they drew three times and lost once.
There is also strong rivalry between the teams since clashing at the business end of the competition for the last two seasons. In the 2013-14 RSPL final, Montego Bay whipped Waterhouse 5-2 to lift the title. At the semi-final stage last season, the St James-based club was again victorious, comfortably beating Waterhouse over two legs.
In today’s other game, eighth-placed Cavalier SC (24 points) welcomed ninth-placed FC Reno (23 points) to the Stadium East field in a 5:00 pm kick-off. While resurgent Cavalier have won their last two games, struggling Reno have lost four of their last five outings.
Tomorrow, sixth-placed Boys’ Town FC (26 points) entertain fourth-placed Humble Lion FC (29 points) at Barbican Sports Complex, starting at 3:00 in the afternoon.
Tivoli Gardens FC, another team floundering in an unfamiliar position in the table, travel to Juici Park in Clarendon to take on RSPL leaders Portmore United in another 3:00 pm clash.
Tivoli, under the tutelage of Head Coach Christopher Bender, are just outside of the relegation zone in 10th place with 19 points from as many games. The impressive Portmore, guided by Head Coach Jeffrey Hewitt, have 40 points.
Also at 3:00 pm, 11th-placed Rivoli United, who have 18 points from 19 games, host second-placed Arnett Gardens (38 points) at Spanish Town Prison Oval.
First-timers University of the West Indies (UWI) FC face visitors Harbour View FC at the Mona Bowl at 3 o’ clock. UWI, who have won three of their last five games, are seventh with 26 points. Harbour View, who have failed to win any of their last three, also have 26, but they are fifth thanks to a healthier goal difference.
