Virgo hospitalised after clash with ‘Tuffy’
Boys’ Town FC missed the chance to earn a much-needed win after a 0-0 result against 10-man Waterhouse FC in the Red Stripe Premier League match at Barbican Sports Complex yesterday.
Waterhouse’s central defender Rohan Amos was sent off in the 56th minute after being shown a second yellow card.
Proceedings were marred close to the final whistle when Boys’ Town’s Xavian Virgo was taken to hospital with a suspected broken nose after he came out second-best in an aerial challenge with Waterhouse player Jermaine ‘Tuffy’ Anderson.
Anderson was shown a yellow card for the challenge even as blood gushed from the face of Virgo while he received treatment before being whisked away in an ambulance.
With the result, the hosts Boys’ Town inched to 26 points, but remain sixth in the 12-team table. Waterhouse stay last with 16 points. There was little to cheer about in the first half as the teams, both guilty of giving away possession easily, cancelled out each other.
The second half saw a slight improvement in the action as both teams pressed for the go-ahead goal. Just after the restart, Boys’ Town attacker Michael Campbell fired high after finding himself with space inside the penalty box.
Amos was given his marching orders four minutes shy of the hour mark after being cautioned a second time for a professional foul on Boys’ Town’s Lennox Cargill.
Boys’ Town got an excellent chance to make the one-man advantage count not long after, but forward Peter Keyes blasted wide with his right boot.
Still, Waterhouse remained dangerous. Late in the encounter, former Rivoli United player Kemar Beckford crossed for Waterhouse teammate Kenroy Howell to turn his one-time effort on goal.
The ball burst from the grasp of Boys’ Town goalkeeper Mikhail Harrison; however it struck the crossbar before rebounding to safety. Only moments later Waterhouse’s veteran midfielder Weston Forrest saw his crisply struck close-range effort sail wide.
Meanwhile, the match scheduled for Edward Seaga Sports Complex between hosts Tivoli Gardens FC and Rivoli United was postponed. Tivoli team manager Brian Rose said the issue was caused by an overflow of sewage that went onto the playing surface.
