No letting up for Portmore, says Waugh
ANDRE Waugh, the technical director of Portmore United, says his team is not likely to get complacent despite their lofty position in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) points table.
Portmore United have 37 points from 19 games, the same as Montego Bay United who have a slight advantage due to a superior goal difference.
“We’re pretty satisfied with where we are. Of course we’d love to be in a much better position, but this is where we are right now. And we’re very grateful to be top, tied with Montego Bay United,” he said.
“We’re not letting up, we know what football is and we are maintaining focus. We’re maintaining our professional attitude that has got us this far. From game to game we are going to be giving our best until the mathematics and the statistics prove that we have qualified. Until then, we are not letting up,” Waugh stressed as he spoke to the Jamaica Observer during Thursday’s weekly RSPL press conference.
Their crushing 5-1 victory over FC Reno in the RSPL match last weekend is certainly an indicator that the players and the coaching staff are singing the same song.
Portmore, formerly known as Hazard United, were most recently winners of the national club title in the 2011-12 season.
The five-time champions were relegated from top-flight football for a season. However, since gaining promotion ahead of the start of this campaign they have been impressive. The qualification stages for the RSPL coincided with Waugh taking up his current role.
Some in the local football fraternity have described Portmore’s display so far as a bit of a fairy tale run. But not Waugh.
He reasoned that the “horror” of being demoted was a bigger surprise story than the “fairy-tale” start to the season for a team just returning to the RSPL.
“It’s a club with a rich tradition and, of course, we always want to be winning, we always want to be creating opportunities for our players, so we want to continue in that vein,” the Portmore United technical director said.
Portmore are scheduled to oppose hosts Harbour View FC in tomorrow’s Monday Night fixture.
